early life
Rufus Frederick Sewell was born on October 29, 1967 in Hammersmith.
His father was Welsh artist, classically trained pianist and waitress Jo Sewell, and his mother was English-Australian animator and former builder William John Frederick Sewell (1924-1978).
His father animated the “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” segment in the Beatles’ Yellow Submarine movie.
Rufus Sewell’s parents divorced when he was five. His father died when he was ten, and his mother raised him and his older brother, Caspar Sewell, alone, working in a bar and selling vegetables to support the two children.
educate
Rufus Sewell attended Trafalgar Junior School in Twickenham, a public junior school, from which he graduated in 1978.
He was a member of the Trafalgar Junior School Drama Club, where he starred in the play Rumpelstiltskin and performed entirely on his knees during the performance.
Sewell went on to attend Orleans Park School, a state comprehensive school in Twickenham, leaving in 1984. He then attended West Thames College, where a drama teacher recommended him for an audition for drama school.
Later, he was admitted to the Central School of Speech and Drama in London.
Profession
Judi Dench had directed one of his plays while at the Central School of Speech and Drama, and after graduating she helped Rufus Sewell find an agent. His career peaked in 1993, when he played the obnoxious Tim in Michael Winner’s film Dirty Weekend.
Later, the winners chose him after seeing one of his plays at the Criterion Theatre. In 1993, he appeared in Tom Stoppard’s play Arcadia at the Royal National Theatre and in the BBC adaptation of George Eliot’s Middlemarch (Lyttelton).
His film credits include John Schlesinger’s Cold Comfort Farm in 1995, John Murdoch’s 1998 science fiction film The City of Darkness, Amazing Grace, The Illusionists, and Nancy Meyers’ romantic comedy The Holiday.
Rufus Sewell, best known for his dastardly roles in films such as A Knight’s Tale, The Legend of Zorro, Bless the Child, Helen of Troy and The Magician, plays Wilberforce’s running mate Thomas Clarkson in Amazing Grace, a film about William Wilberforce’s political fight to abolish slavery in Britain.
He resented it, saying “I don’t want to be a bad guy anymore. Everybody has something they need to do,” said Rufus Sewell. “Well, how do I make this nineteenth century upper-class bad guy different and interesting?” the actor said.
In 2008, Rufus Sewell played Alexander Hamilton in the HBO series John Adams. He received critical acclaim for his portrayal of Charles II in the BBC series Charles II: The Power and the Passion. Ian McDiarmid, Helen McCrory, Rupert Graves and Shirley Henderson starred in the series, which chronicled the king’s life from exile to death. He co-starred in the controversial film Downloading Nancy, which was released on June 5, 2009.
Audiences walked out of the 2008 Sundance Film Festival, and as of summer 2008, it was unclear whether the film would be released theatrically. Despite the backlash, Rufus Sewell remains a staunch supporter of the film. “Whether you think it’s a success or a failure, whether you like it or not, it’s a film that I’m proud of. I’m honored to have been a part of it.”
Between 2006 and 2009, Rufus Sewell read Russell Thorndike’s Doctor Sheen stories on BBC Radio, playing an 18th century priest, adventurer, smuggler and pirate.
Although Rufus Sewell is known for his period dramas, he prefers “tieless” roles in contemporary productions, such as Petruchio in the BBC’s 2005 adaptation of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew. This was part of the Shakespeare Retellings series, and he was nominated for a 2006 BAFTA Best Actor Award for his performance in the play. In this modern version of Shakespeare’s play, the plot moves from 17th century Padua, Italy to 21st century London.
Since becoming a professional actor, Rufus Sewell has appeared in four Shakespeare adaptations: Hotspur in Henry IV, Part 1 in 1995, Fortinbras in Hamlet in 1996 and the title role in Macbeth in 1999. He reprised the role with his Charles II co-star Shirley Henderson.
He performed in the first production of Tom Stoppard’s new play Rock at the Royal Court Theatre in June and July 2006, and at the Duke of York’s Theatre from July to November 2006. The play was a critical and financial success, playing to sold-out shows, and received numerous accolades and nominations, including the Evening Standard Award, Critics’ Circle Award and Olivier Award for Best Actor for Rufus Sewell.
In Fort Collins, he has recorded 36 CDs covering all 11 James Bond novels by Ian Fleming. He has also worked in film, television and theatre, most recently as Dr. Jacob Hood in the CBS television series The 11th Hour. In November 2009, he completed production on the miniseries The Temple, which aired on television in 2010.
In 2010, he played Italian detective Aurelio Zen in the BBC One drama Zen, based on the best-selling novel by Michael Dibdin. Three episodes of the series were filmed in Rome and premiered on BBC One in early January 2011. Unfortunately, the BBC cancelled the series after one season.
He also starred in the 2010 film The Tourist, which starred Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp and was released in theaters. Finally, in the June 2012 film Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, he played the vampire protagonist Adam.
In Tom Stoppard’s 2013 radio play The Dark Side, based on Pink Floyd’s record The Dark Side of the Moon, Rufus Sewell plays the ethicist.
Rufus Sewell co-starred with Dwayne Johnson in the film Hercules as Autolycus, which was released in July 2014. In 2015, Rufus Sewell voiced Sir Claude the Wildcat in the animated film Winking Bill Movie.
Rufus Sewell’s recent roles include John Smith (a high-ranking American official who becomes a Nazi official) in The Man in the High Castle and Lord Melbourne in Victoria.
