Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II was reinstated as Emir of Kano amid controversial political changes

Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II, former Governor of the Central Bank and deposed Emir of Kano, has been reinstated as Emir of Kano, sparking widespread discussions on social media. The reinstatement follows the decision by the Kano State House of Assembly to abolish the four new Emirates created in 2019 under former Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, effectively reversing the law that led to their ouster. The Kano State House of Assembly has passed ‘Kano State Assembly (Abolition) Bill, 2024,’ dissolved the additional emirates of Rano, Karaye, Gaya and Bichi. This legislative move underscores a significant political change in Kano, highlighting the governor’s commitment to his campaign promises and the traditional structure of the Emirate of Kano.

Sanusi’s reinstatement was deemed automatic following the passage of the bill and sources said he would return to Kano on Friday. Although no official statement has been made regarding his reinstatement, the Senior Special Assistant on Digital Media to the state governor, Kwankwason Tuwita, has confirmed the approval bill on X.

The 2019 Act establishing the new emirates was controversial, causing a rift between then Governor Ganduje and Sanusi II, eventually leading to Sanusi’s ouster. Sanusi’s return marked a major political change in Kano, reaffirming the traditional structure of the Kano Emirate.

Reaction to this news has been mixed. Some celebrated the return of Sanusi II to his rightful place as Emir of Kano, while others questioned the political implications and future of the dissolved emirates.
