Sarkodie (born 10 July 1988) is the professional name of Michael Owusu Addo, a Ghanaian rapper and businessman from Tema.

His contributions to the Ghanaian music industry have earned him many awards, including the Vodafone Ghana Music Award for “Artist of the Decade”.

He is one of the greatest African rappers of all time for his contributions to the culture.

Early life

Sarkodie, the fourth of five children, was born on July 10, 1988.

He grew up in Koforidua before his parents moved to Tema, where he started school.

Sarkodie began his music career as an underground rapper, participating in Adom FM’s popular rap competition Kasahare Level.

As mentioned earlier, he met his former manager, Duncan Williams of Duncwills Entertainment, while participating in the competition.

He also met musicians Edem and Castro, who introduced him to Hammer of The Last Two, a prestigious record producer.

Impressed by his rap flow, Hammer allowed Sarkodie to record two songs for Edem’s first album, Volta Regime.

Education

Sarkodie attended Tema Methodist Day Senior High School and continued on to IPMC where he earned a degree in graphic design.

Career

Sarkodie was announced as the first winner of BET’s Best International Flow Artist award at the 2019 BET Hip Hop Awards. He is also considered one of the leading proponents of the Azonto genre and dance, co was one of the most successful African rappers of all time.

Besides his music career, on July 13, 2013, Sarkodie founded The Sarkodie Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting disadvantaged children. In addition, he also donated generously to the Royal Seed Home Orphanage in Kasoa.

On December 25, 2014, the Foundation began a child feeding campaign in Tema, Ghana, where they provided thousands of children with bags of rice, yogurt, and cans of soft drinks. They also donated school bags, water bottles, hats and other items. Roshi Motman, CEO of Tigo Telecommunications was also present to support the campaign.

Furthermore, Sarkodie also owns the Sark by Yas clothing line, which was launched on April 27, 2013. The clothing line has accessories for men, women and children. In 2012, he was officially announced as the Brand Ambassador for Samsung Electronics at the University of Ghana, Legon.

As part of the event, Samsung introduced the Samsung Galaxy Pocket and Chief Hero phones with custom wallpapers of Sarkodie and his signature; users have the opportunity to download Sarkodie’s exclusive tracks. He also launched Obidi Chief headphones and signed an endorsement deal with FanMilk Ghana in 2013.

Sarkodie is currently collaborating with Tigo Telecommunications Ghana, the brand that sponsored his 2013 Rapperholic tour.

Sarkodie also has endorsement deals with Standard Chartered Bank – a leading banking company in Africa and Guinness Ghana Limited for their Malt drinks product. On October 30, 2019, he was appointed ambassador for the Year of Return campaign; the honor was bestowed upon him at the Creative Arts Industry Forum.

In March 2021, Sarkodie and his young daughter appeared on Ghana’s leading toothpaste brand – promoting Pepsodent Ghana’s #BrushWithMe campaign. This campaign is designed to urge parents and guardians to start and encourage the habit of brushing teeth day and night with their children. This was done to celebrate World Oral Health Day.

Sarkodie married Tracy Owusu Addo also known as Tracy Sarkcess in a private wedding ceremony held in Tema, Ghana on July 17, 2018. He is currently 38 years old.

They have two children; a daughter, Adalyn Owusu Addo, and a son; Michael Nana Yaw Owusu Addo Jnr, named after the famous rapper. He used to date Sarkodie.
