Senator Ned Nwoko proposed Anioma state for balance in the Southeast

Senator Ned Nwoko, representing Delta North, has introduced a bill supporting the creation of Anioma State. The primary goal of the bill is to correct historical errors and ensure equitable representation and resource allocation for the Southeast region.

Senator Nwoko said that the Southeast currently has a disproportionate number of states compared to other geopolitical zones, leading to disparities in national representation and resource allocation. He asserted that the establishment of Anioma State is both urgent and necessary to address the long-standing problem of geopolitical imbalance in Nigeria.

The proposed Anioma State would be demarcated into nine local government areas, six of which have significant oil and gas reserves. Senator Nwoko emphasized the urgency of the move, stressing that it was critical to addressing persistent disparities in Nigeria’s geopolitical state distribution.

The initiative has received support from many stakeholders, including the socio-cultural group Anioma, Izu Anioma and the cultural organization Pan Igbo, Ohanaeze Indi Igbo. Additionally, the political leadership in Anioma, including the traditional rulers led by the late Asagba of Asaba, Obi (Professor) Joseph Chike Edozien, have consistently supported the creation of Anioma State.

Senator Nwoko emphasized that the creation of Anioma State was not merely about increasing numbers; it is about promoting equitable representation and resource allocation for the Southeast. With widespread support from stakeholders, the time has come to realize the creation of Anioma State, redress the imbalances of the past and ensure fair representation in national governance.

The bill is poised to ignite a debate on statehood in Nigeria, with those supporting its necessity in achieving justice and equality for the South East region. As the proposal moves through legislative channels, all eyes will be on Congress to determine whether this ambitious effort comes to fruition.
