Oluseyi Abiodun Makinde was born on December 25, 1967 in Nigeria. He is a businessman, politician and philanthropist.

He is the governor of Oyo State in southwestern Nigeria. He is an expert in gas and liquid measurement and an engineer.

He is the managing director of Makon Group Limited, an indigenous oil and gas company in Nigeria.

After years of experience working at major oil and gas companies, he founded Makon Engineering and Technical Services (METS), his first private oil and gas company, in 1997 when he was 29 years old.

Early life

Makinde was born on December 25, 1967 to the late Pa Olatubosun Makinde, a renowned educationist turned accountant, and Mrs Abigail Makinde at Aigbofa Compound in Oja’ba, Ibadan. He is the third child in the family.

Makinde started his education at St. Paul’s Primary School in Yemetu, Ibadan and completed his schooling there. He completed his secondary education at Bishop Phillips Academy in Monatan, Ibadan.

He started studying at the University of Lagos (Unilag) in 1985 and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from there.

Oluwaseyi was trained in Safe Shutdown Systems at Industrial Control Services in Houston, Texas in 1998 and Analytical Capability Development for Operations Management at Lagos Business School (now Pan-Atlantic University) in 1999.

He trained in automation in 2000. In 2002, he attended the Jiskoot Automotive Control Training Centre in Kent, UK, to study the Fundamentals of Rough Sampling.

He also majored in Understanding and Solving Complex Business Problems at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States in 2005.

Career

Makinde completed his NYSC at Shell Nigeria Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) where he later worked as a trainee engineer.

He held various positions between 1990 and 1992, managing and participating in several important projects. He worked as a site engineer (Eket operations) for Rebold International Limited from 1992 to 1997. In 1995, he was promoted to site manager.

Makinde founded his own business, Makon Engineering and Technical Services Limited (METS), in 1997 after spending five years (1992–1997) as Head of Engineering for various international oil and gas corporations (IOCs). He is currently the Chief Executive Officer of the Makon Group of Companies.

Makinde is a member of the International Automation Society (ISA), the Institute of Measurement and Control UK, the American Metrological Institute (AMI), the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), the Council for Technical Regulations of Nigeria (COREN), the Society of Petroleum Design Engineers of Nigeria (OGDEN) and the Council for Technical Regulations of Nigeria (COREN).

Political context

As part of the All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP), Makinde contested the Oyo South senatorial seat in 2007, but was defeated by Kamoru Adedibu of the People’s Democratic Party.

Despite the initial defeat, Makinde persisted and ran for the Oyo South Senatorial seat under the Peoples Democratic Party in 2010. However, he was defeated in the primary by the current Oyo South Senator.

Makinde ran for governor of Oyo State in 2015 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2014.

After the party’s primaries concluded in December 2014, he was denied the governor’s nomination.

Makinde, on the other hand, remained true to his calling and joined the Social Democratic Party (SDP). On the platform of the SDP, he unsuccessfully campaigned for the governorship of Oyo State in 2015.

Engineer Seyi Makinde has rejoined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after a long period of extensive engagement with national officials, leaders and elders of the Social Democratic Party in Oyo State, and many other strategic partners within Oyo State.

He asserted that he joined the PDP not for personal gain but for the development of the state through finding lasting solutions to the state’s many woes.

Makinde was elected as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate for Oyo State in the 2019 general elections after receiving 2772 votes in the primary election held at the Liberty Stadium, Oke-Ado in Ibadan on 29 September 2018.

Makinde received 515,621 votes on 9 March 2019, surpassing his nearest rival, Adebayo Adelabu of the All Progressives Party, who received 357,982 votes.

In the general election, the All Progressives Congress (APC) emerged victorious. Mr. Seyi Makinde was elected Governor of Oyo State in the 2019 Oyo State Governorship Election, which held on 9 March 2019.
