Shania Twain’s abuse experience revisited after taking the Glastonbury festival stage

Shania Twain’s traumatic past once again became the focus of attention when she performed on the Glastonbury Legend show.

On Sunday, June 30, the singer dominated the 2024 Glastonbury Festival with her impressive performance. She smoothly completed the set in which she debuted with the 1998 classic “That Didn’t Impress Me Much.”

Before taking the stage, the Queen of Country Music experienced a poor and abusive childhood.

The Mirror shared Shania’s previous interview with The Sunday Times, in which she opened up about learning to make money from her talent after her parents divorced. Her mother remarried and her second husband, Jerry Twain, adopted her and her two sisters.

“I would go to work after hours and everyone was drunk. It was a horrible environment for a kid. But I was very professional and took it very seriously,” she said, adding that Jerry would beat her mother if she didn’t make enough money for the family.

She tried her best to protect and defend herself from the physical and sexual abuse, but Shania got to the point where she had to push her chest down to make it go unnoticed.

“Because, oh my god, it’s horrible — you don’t want to be a girl in my house,” the “Any Man of Mine” singer shared. “You go into society and you’re a girl and you get all the other normal nasty stuff, and it just reinforces it. So you’re like, ‘Oh, I guess being a girl is a bitch. Oh, it’s bad to have boobs.’ I’m ashamed of being a girl.”

Shania previously detailed her experience in her autobiography, From this momentIn addition to being physically and mentally abused, she also revealed that Jerry sexually abused her by muttering derogatory words and fondling her when she was a teenager.

The book also shares how heartbroken she was when Mutt Lange left her for her close friend Marie-Anne Thiébaud in 2008.

“I’ll be honest: when your husband leaves you and falls into the arms of your best friend, your self-esteem can really take a hit,” the “Party for Two” singer shared.

Shania and Mutt married in 1993 before splitting in 2008. She later married Marie-Anne’s ex-husband, Frédéric Thiébaud.
