Shiloh Jolie, the daughter of Hollywood stars Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, has officially dropped her father’s surname. The legal process, which is set to be finalized on August 19, 2024, marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing saga of the Jolie-Pitt family relationship.
Shiloh, who turned 18 in May, initiated the name change on her birthday, going from Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt to Shiloh Nouvel Jolie. The decision was symbolic of her transition into adulthood and her desire to move away from her father’s surname. The decision was set against the backdrop of her parents’ contentious and highly publicized divorce, which began in 2016 and remains unresolved in many respects.
To complete the name change, Shiloh had to comply with California law, which required her to undergo a background check and publish her intentions in a local newspaper for a month. She handled the process herself, hiring her own attorney, demonstrating her determination to take control of this personal change.

Shiloh’s decision to remove “Pitt” comes after years of estrangement from her father, reportedly exacerbated by allegations of an altercation during a family jet flight in 2016 that were at the heart of the divorce proceedings. Although Brad Pitt was cleared of child abuse by the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services, the incident had a lasting impact on the family’s relationships.
Shiloh’s move isn’t just within the family. Her sister, Vivienne Jolie-Pitt, has recently appeared in public without using “Pitt,” and her brother, Maddox Chivan Jolie-Pitt, has also moved away from the surname, although it’s not yet legal.
Sources close to Brad Pitt say that although he knew about Shiloh’s decision, he is said to be upset by the request, highlighting the emotional complexity of the family’s ongoing legal and personal battles.
