He is widely known for his role as Mpiyakhe Zungu in Mzansi Magic’s Isibaya.

Early life

Born and raised in Umlazi Township in Durban, KwaZulu- Natal, Siyabonga Thwala began acting in 1989.

He was born in 1996 on March 17. He loved acting since he was young and was supported by his parents.

Career

Siyabonga Thwala began his acting career in 1989. He made his acting debut in the 1996 film, Born Free: A New Adventure. That same year, he guest-starred in an episode of the television series Tarzan: The Epic Adventures titled Tarzan and the Scarlet Diamond (Season 1, Episode 5).

In 1998, he was offered the role of Godlieb Mofokeng in the new SABC 3 soap opera, Isidingo but turned it down because he felt he was not ready for a long-term commitment to television. Soon after, he appeared in the television sitcom Streaks based on a hair salon in Cape Town, where he appeared alongside veteran actor Themba Ndaba.

In 2003, he played Jimmy on Gazlam. Siyabonga Thwala rose to fame through his role as Vusi Zwane in e.tv’s newly launched drama series, Scandal!. This role earned him the Golden Horn (South African Film and Television Awards) for Best Actor in a Drama Series.

In 2007, he played Paul Mashaba, the journalist younger brother of ruthless businessman Kenneth Mashaba played by Seputla Sebogodi, on SABC 1’s Generations.

In 2013, he landed arguably the biggest role of his career to date, as taxi boss Mpiyakhe Zungu on MzansibMagic’s critically acclaimed Isibaya. The role of Mpiyakhe Zungu is so popular with the show’s viewers that for most of the show’s history, the character has always been the central character around whom the story has been written.

This role also earned him the 2014 South African Film and Television Award for Best Actor in a Drama Television Series. Siyabonga Thwala joins the cast of Muvhango in the lead role of Busani Mojalefa. That same year, he appeared on e.tv’s Rhythm City as DH Radebe.

He also appeared in the HIV/AIDS drama series, Intersexions for which he won his 2nd South African Film and Television Award in 2014 for Best Actor in a Drama.

Siyabonga Thwala created and hosted the documentary series Yobe.

In 2019, he featured in the award-winning drama thriller, The Republic as corrupt former President Hendrik, where he starred alongside Florence Masebe and Hlomla Dandala.
