early life
Skepta was named Joseph Junior Adenuga at birth.
He was born on September 19, 1982 in Tottenham, a city in north London, England.
He is the son of Joseph Adenuga (father) and Ivy Adenuga (mother), both of whom are Nigerians.
Skepta’s parents left Nigeria before he was born in search of a better life and to escape the civil war that disrupted Nigeria’s peace in 1966.
Her mother published a book about the problems that led to their escape from Nigeria a few years later.
He is the eldest of four siblings, including his elder brother Jimmy Adenuga (Jme), who is also a musician.
He grew up in the Meridian Walk Estate in the center of Tottenham.

Skepta began his career as a singer, inspired by hip-hop music from the United States and the United Kingdom. He began to gain influence by participating in local competitions and appearing on private radio stations.
In order to further his career, he began working as a DJ for a grime band in Tottenham called The Meridian Crew. He used this opportunity to release a number of instrumentals, including “DTI (Pirate Station)” and “Private Caller”.
In 2005, The Meridian group disbanded, and Skepta formed another grime group called Roll Deep with his brother Jme and another rapper Joseph Bamber.
A year later, Skepta teamed up with his brother to form a mini-record label in London called Boy Better Know as an independent record label.
Skepta and MC Devilman had a fierce competition for the DVD of Lord Of Mics 2. This competition is still regarded by many as the biggest rivalry in grime history.
A few months after the competition, Skepta released his debut studio mixtape titled “Joseph Junior Adenuga”. He also released his debut studio album titled “Greatest Hits” on September 17, 2007.
The album was followed by singles including “Bad Boy”, “Rescue Me”, “Cross My Heart”, “Doin It Again”, “Lush” and another album in 2009, “Microphone Champion”.
His most successful album, Konnichiwa, was released on May 6, 2016. The album was well received. It launched a party in Tokyo, Japan, and got Skepta signed to perform at various events.
Skepta decided to go on a music tour he called “No USA” which includes 14 shows in the United States and some European countries. He named this tour “No USA” because he had previously canceled a tour due to visa restrictions.
Skepta has since collaborated with another top artist, including returning to Nigeria to collaborate with Wizkid on the hit song “Mamacita with Energy” and most recently retained “Dimension” which he released in 2021 with producer Jae5 alongside Rema.
