Somizi Mhlongo was born in Soweto, South Africa. His mother, Mary Twala, is a veteran South African actress who was recently nominated for an African Movie Academy Award, and his father, Ndaba Mhlongo, is also an actor and comedian.

He was nurtured from an early age by his parents, who were at the peak of their careers at the time. His father starred in a number of films, including Kamikaze (1986), Isivumelwano (1978) and Bad Company (1985).

This helped Somizi Motaung to easily succeed in the entertainment industry; he landed his first acting role at the age of thirteen.
