Sam Phillips has a long career in South African film and theatre. The veteran actor began his career in 1971 with the Space Theatre.
Originally a stage actor, he moved to Johannesburg in 1981 to pursue a career in television and film after the advent of black television (before this, most films featured white South Africans). Not surprisingly, he has become a mentor and role model for contemporary South African actors.
Note that his debut in film was in 1976. He worked on Lysistrata, the first multiracial film offered by the Space Theater.
In the 1980s, he worked as an acting proofreader for Kinnerland and Scholtz Films, where he was involved in the editing of a large number of films for the company.
