He was the third son of landowner and businessman David Matthews, from his second marriage to Rhodesian-born artist Jane Spencer Parker.
He has a half-sister, Nina, and two brothers, James and Michael. Michael died at the age of 22 in 1999 while climbing Mount Everest.
