St Vincent Slams John Mayer Hit As ‘Worst Song Ever Written’: ‘Disgustingly Sexist’

St. Vincent doesn’t like one of John Mayer’s hit songs.

While promoting her latest album “All Born Screaming” and tour, St. Vincent discussed the most influential songs in her life in a new interview with Kerrang.

When the Grammy winner – real name Annie Clark – was asked to name what she considered “the worst song ever written”, she chose Mayer’s 2003 hit, “Daughters”.

“It’s so sexually disgusting and yet it pretends to be a love song, but it’s really, really backwards and really sexist,” St. Vincent explained. “And I hate it… It’s incredibly misogynistic, which would be fine if you owned it, but it pretends to be sweet.”

In the song, Mayer warns fathers that mistreating their daughters will cause problems for the men their daughters will later date.

“Fathers, treat your daughters well / Daughters will love you like you do / Girls become lovers then become mothers / So mothers, treat your daughters well too,” he sings in the chorus.

He continued: “Boys will be strong / And boys will fight / But boys will go away without the warmth from / A woman’s kind heart.”

“Daughters,” from Mayer’s 2003 album “Heavier Things,” reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Adult Pop Airplay chart and No. 2 on the Adult Contemporary chart, according to Billboard. In 2005, the song won the Grammy Award for Song of the Year.

Last year, St. Vincent and Mayer shared the stage at the Love Rocks NYC event.

St. Vincent are scheduled to return to the UK and Europe in October to continue their “All Born Screaming” tour.
