Stephan James (born December 16, 1993) is a 30-year-old Canadian actor, model, and television personality.
He starred in a series of TV series during his teenage years and rose to fame when he won the Canadian Screen Award for Best Actor.
This achievement was a result of his role as track and field sprinter Jesse Owens in the 2016 film Race.

early life
Stephen James was born in Toronto, Ontario. He graduated from Jarvis College in 2011.
He is the younger brother of actor Shamier Anderson and his family is Jamaican.
In 2018, he starred in Barry Jenkins’ acclaimed drama If Beale Street Could Talk, based on the James Baldwin novel of the same name.
In the same year, Stephen James played Walter Cruz in the Amazon TV series “Homecoming” and was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for the show.

Stephan James got his start in television with a two-season recurring role on the long-running Canadian teen drama series Degrassi. After leaving Degrassi, Stephan James has appeared in various supporting roles on television, including How to Be Independent, The Greatest Show, and My Babysitter Is a Vampire in 2011, and The Listener and LA Connection in 2012. Additionally, he had a supporting role in the ABC Family TV movie 12 Dates of Christmas in 2011.
Stephen James had his first major film role in the Canadian film Returning (2012), playing a deported Jamaican opposite Tatyana Ali and Fefe Dobson. Although the film received mixed reviews, The Globe and Mail gave a positive review of Stephen James’ performance, calling it “heartbreaking”.

At the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival, Stephan James was named one of the industry’s top “rising stars.” In celebration of Black History Month, Stephan James was named one of the “Six Black Canadian Cultural Creators” by CBC and cited Oprah Winfrey as one of his greatest influences.
In 2016, Stephan James played African-American track and field sprinter Jesse Owens in the biopic Race (2016), opposite Jason Sudeikis, replacing Star Wars star John Boyega. For his performance in Race, Stephan James won the Canadian Screen Award for Best Actor.
In 2017, Stephen James played the role of Preston Terry, a prosecutor in the Department of Justice, in the FOX limited series Shots Fired. In 2018, he starred in Barry Jenkins’ film If Beale Street Could Talk, based on James Baldwin’s novel, which was nominated for multiple Oscars. In the same year, he played Walter Cruz in the Amazon series Homecoming, co-starring with Julia Roberts, Bobby Cannavale and Shea Whigham.

Personal life
Stephan James and his brother, actor Shamier Anderson, founded a nonprofit in 2016 called BLACK Canada (Building Legends in Performance, Film and Knowledge).
In December 2020, they announced an expansion of the organization, called the Black Academy, showcasing Black talent across Canada in the fields of arts, culture, entertainment and sports.
“We don’t lack talent, but we lack opportunity,” Stephen James explained. “So we can only hope that the Black Academy will continue to uplift and inspire the English and French communities to come together and have a place where they can build on what they’ve already started and be celebrated and respected for it, as they rightly should be.”
The organization’s vision includes building a coalition of supporters that provides funding, mentoring, programming and awards to support Black excellence in Canada.
