Steve Arneil was born on August 29, 1934 but died on July 2, 2021, at the age of 86.

He is a famous South African-born British Kyokushin Karate master.

He studied directly with Masutatsu Oyama and was a senior instructor at Oyama’s International Karate Organization (IKO) until 1991 when he resigned from the IKO.

Steve Arneil is the founder and President of the International Karate Federation (IFK), holding the rank of 10th dan and the title of Hanshi.

He and his wife settled in the UK in 1965. He and his wife traveled to London in 1965.

Early life

When Steve Arneil was ten years old, his family moved to Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia), and he began training in Kung Fu, Judo and boxing there.

At the age of 16, he was selected to represent Northern Rhodesia in rugby.

By the age of 17, Steve Arneil had achieved a black belt in Judo and had also practiced Kenpo and Karate.

He moved to Durban, South Africa to pursue graduate studies in mechanical engineering.

Steve Arneil traveled to many countries such as China, Korea and Hong Kong before moving to Japan.

He studied several styles of Karate, including Shotokan, Wado-Ryu and Goju-Ryu (under Gogen Yamaguchi).

In Durban, Steve Arneil trained at a judo dojo (gym) that also offered karate training. He made a practice of going down to the harbour and asking newly arrived Japanese people if they practiced karate; if so, he would invite them to train at the dojo.

In 1959, Steve Arneil left South Africa for Southeast Asia. On May 22, 1965, he became the first person to complete the 100-man Kumite since Oyama.

He went to the UK to help establish Kyokushin Karate there, but it was difficult.

He also attempted to move to Australia, but was unsuccessful; Steve Arneil said it was “quite by accident that we ended up in England”. He died in late 1965 on 2 July 2021.

Education

In January 1961, through Donn Draeger, Steve Arneil began studying Kyokushin Karate under the guidance of Masutatsu Oyama.

He recalls that, unlike other Karate schools he visited in Japan (which welcomed him with minimal reservations), Oyama’s Kyokushin school. We found no other educational records.

Career

Steve Arneil was promoted to 1st dan in Kyokushin karate on May 15, 1962, to 2nd dan on April 16, 1963, and to 3rd dan on July 10, 1965.

In May 1966 he was promoted to 4th Dan. From 1968 to 1976 he was Team Manager and Coach for the British Karate and British All Styles teams, which became the first non-Japanese team to win the World Karate Championships in 1975/76.

Steve Arneil was promoted to 5th dan on January 15, 1968 and to 6th dan on October 7, 1974. In 1975, the French Karate Federation awarded him the title of “Best Instructor in the World”. On August 6, 1977, Arneil was promoted to 7th dan in Kyokushin karate.

In 1991, Steve Arneil and BKK resigned from the IKO, and Arneil subsequently formed his own karate organisation, IFK. Arneil is currently President of IFK and BKK. On 30 May 1992, he was awarded the British Karate Society 8th Dan for his contributions to karate in the UK.

On May 26, 2001, he achieved the rank of 9th dan at their meeting in Berlin. On July 23, 2011, Arneil was awarded the rank of 10th dan at the 3rd IFK U-18 World Tournament presented by the IFK in recognition of his dedication to Kyokushin Karate.

The 50th anniversary of the British Kyokushinkai Karate (BKK) was celebrated in 2015 and the main celebrations took place at the 39th British Open Knockdown Championships in Crawley on 17 October.
