Alana had a low-grade fever and aches in March 2020, and she tested positive for COVID-19. Her doctor immediately did an X-ray of her lungs to make sure she didn’t have pneumonia, but both lungs were clear.
She was put on a COVID treatment regimen that included the anti-malarial drug hydroxychloroquine, as well as the antibiotics Zithromax and zinc.
Four days later, Alfallah was much worse. Her fever spiked to 103, and she developed pneumonia in both lungs. She was flown from her home in Beverly Hills to Cedars-Sinai. “I think the drugs made me sicker,” she said of the treatment.
Alana’s doctor, Dr. Robert Huizenga, a Harvard-trained physician and associate professor of clinical medicine at UCLA, said Los Angeles Magazine“Alana’s infection level was so high that it looked like she wasn’t going to make it.”
Alana was willing to let doctors try anything. Running out of options, Huizenga realized he needed to treat the cytokine storm by reducing lung inflammation. He tried to get the Ebola drug remdesivir, but it wasn’t available. Next on the list was an anti-inflammatory called Actemra, but it was only available to patients in the ICU.
“Before I put her in the ICU, I gave her one last dose,” Huizenga said. “Out of desperation, I tried an anti-inflammatory supplement called NMN. [nicotinamide mononucleotide].” He sat in the hospital room as she drank the NMN cocktail, which contained boosters like zinc.
“When he gave me the first dose in the hospital, I didn’t think it would work,” Alana admitted. “But 12 hours later, my fever was down a few degrees, and my inflammation was cut in half.” She took the pills again the next morning. Her temperature was back to normal by evening. Even after she was discharged from Cedars a few days later, she continued taking the NMN mix.
