Early life

Actress Summer Glau was born in San Antonio, Texas, to parents Mari Glau and Mark Glau on July 24, 1981.

Her mother is a teacher and her father is a construction contractor.

Growing up, Summer Glau was homeschooled as she was also training to become a classical ballet dancer.

Ballet requires a lot of dedication, and it takes about ten years for a performer to become a classical ballerina.

Her dedication paid off as Summer Glau grew into a phenomenal dancer, becoming a soloist in her ballet company and starting to work with a symphony orchestra at the age of 14. Sadly, her dancing career was cut short.

Ballet is a beautiful and powerful form of dance. Unfortunately, it is known to cause hip, foot, knee, and ankle injuries to dancers. Stress fractures and arthritis are also common.

In Summer Glau’s case, her problem started with a broken toe that she didn’t rest to let heal. She danced on it for four months.

Summer Glau eventually developed tendinitis in her ankle, which left her with no use of her foot. She was only 19 years old, and it was the end of her ballet career.

Before becoming a famous actress, Summer said she worked in commercials and danced tango for about a year to pay the bills.

Education

Summer Glau received a scholarship to a ballet company and was homeschooled from grades 3 through 12 to accommodate her ballet training. In addition to her classical ballet training, she also studied tango and flamenco.

Career

After her dream of becoming a ballerina was crushed by an injury, Summer Glau left her home in Texas and headed to Los Angeles.

After two years in LA, she got her first on-screen job in 2001 in Joss Whedon’s Angel series. In an interesting coincidence, her first role was as a ballerina.
