Suzanne Marie Somers was born on October 16, 1946, in San Bruno, California. She was born into an Irish-American Catholic family. Marion Elizabeth worked as a medical secretary, while Francis Mahoney began working as a laborer and gardener.

She was six years old when her father become an alcoholic. Her father called her names and abused her. She attended San Francisco College for Women after graduating from Capuchino High School.

Somers began her acting career in the late 1960s and early 1970s, playing modest roles in films. These included appearances on various talk shows promoting her poetry collection, as well as roles in films such as “The Blonde Girl in the White Thunderbird” in American Graffiti.
