Terrence Vaughan Mann was born on July 1, 1951 in Ashland, Kentucky, USA.

He was born into a family with a strong musical background – his mother, Helen Mann, was a pianist, and his father, Charles Mann, sang in a barbershop quartet. Mann was the eldest of three sons, with two younger brothers, Charles Brian Mann and Timothy Mann.

Mann graduated from Largo High School in 1969. He initially attended Jacksonville University for two years (1969-1971) before transferring to the North Carolina Institute of the Arts.

His mentor at the North Carolina School of the Arts was Malcolm Morrison, who was previously the president of the Hartt School at the University of Hartford. Mann’s ethnicity is white, and his religious affiliation is unknown.
