Musicians have previously scorned the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for a variety of reasons, including honoring artists who are not considered “rock”. They won’t be changing their name anytime soon, though.
Talking to VultureInstitute president John Sykes shared that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will stand by its name.
“I think it’s because some people don’t understand the meaning of rock and roll. If you go back to the original sound of the 50s, it’s everything. Like [2023 inductee] Missy Elliott calls it chewing gum. It’s just known as rock and roll,” he told the outlet.
“So when I hear people say, ‘You should change it to the Music Hall of Fame,’ rock and roll has kind of covered that whole territory. Instead of throwing away that name, it’s do a better job of communicating to people where Rock and roll comes from and what it’s really about. Once they hear it that way, they understand,” Sykes continued.
“The best story to convey this was when a great friend of mine, Jay-Z, was introduced a few years ago. I was so excited. But he told me, ‘Rock is dead. It’s dead. should be called Hip-Hop Hall.” Reputation.’ And I said, ‘Oh, hip-hop is rock and roll.’ He said, ‘No, it’s not that.’ And I said, ‘We’ve got to explain that better. Previous Rock and Roll Hall of Fame critics include Oasis member Liam Gallagher and KISS member Gene Simmons.

Another critic of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and its genre-bending boundaries is KISS member Gene Simmons, who spoke to CBS about it.

Dolly Parton was introduced in 2022 and has previously tried to remove herself from the ballot.
