Early life and education
Timothy Wonnacott was born on March 12, 1951 in Barnstaple, Devon, England, United Kingdom. Wonnacott was the son of Major Raymond Wonnacott, an auctioneer in the South West of England, and his wife, Pamela Rosalind Wonnacott. He had an older brother, Paul Wonnacott, who died in the late 1960s.
Wonnacott was educated at the independent West Buckland School in Devon. After qualifying as a chartered auctioneer and chartered surveyor, he undertook a postgraduate course at the Victoria and Albert Museum in fine and decorative arts. Wonnacott’s ethnicity is white and he is Christian.
Career
Tim Wonnacott’s ambition from an early age was to follow in the footsteps of his father, Major Raymond Wonnacott, an auctioneer in the South West of England. Wonnacott joined the prestigious auction house Sotheby’s in 1978 and rose steadily, becoming a full-time Director in 1985.
He was then appointed sole chairman of Sotheby’s South, overseeing salesroom operations in Billingshurst, Sussex and Olympia, London. Wonnacott also ran Sotheby’s operations in the North West of England while he lived in Cheshire.
After 25 successful years at Sotheby’s, Wonnacott left the company in January 2003 to focus on his growing media operations. He founded his own OK art dealer and brokerage firm, Tim Wonnacott & Associates, which provides independent advice to buyers and sellers of antiques.
Wonnacott continues to be active in the auction world. In October 2007, he participated in the world’s largest public art auction. 63 fiberglass cows were sold outside Manchester Town Hall, with proceeds going to a local charity.
