Tove Rowe was born on October 29, 1987. She was born in Stockholm, Sweden to Swedish parents.

Her father, Magnus Nilsson, happens to be one of the founders of iZettle, and her mother, Gunilla Nilsson Edholm, happens to be a renowned psychologist. She got the nickname Tove Lo from her godmother, which was inspired by a bobcat named Tove (or Lo in Swedish) that they met at the zoo.
