Troy Kenneth Aikman (born November 21, 1966), known professionally as Troy Aikman, is an American professional football player and athlete. He spent 12 seasons with the Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League (NFL).

After transferring from Oklahoma, he won the Davey O’Brien Award at UCLA and was selected first overall by the Cowboys in the 1989 NFL Draft.

Troy Aikman, the Cowboys’ longest-tenured quarterback, was selected to six Pro Bowls and won three Super Bowls from 1992 to 1995.

Early life and education

Troy Aikman was born on November 21, 1966 in West Covina, California, United States. He spent his early years as a child in West Covina, California.

He was born to Charlyn Aikman and Kenneth Aikman. He has two siblings: Terri Starns and Tammy Aikman-Powell.

When Troy Aikman was 12 years old, his family moved to Henryetta, Oklahoma. He attended Henryetta High School and starred in football and baseball, earning all-state honors in both sports. In 1983, he also won first place in the Oklahoma High School Typing Contest.

Troy Aikman played quarterback for Oklahoma as a freshman for the first time since World War II in 1984. He led the Sooners to wins over Minnesota, Kansas State and 17th-ranked Texas in the 1985 Red River Shootout, his first full-time collegiate starter before the team lost to the Miami Hurricanes when he left the field with a broken ankle.

Career

The Dallas Cowboys selected Troy Aikman as the first overall pick in the 1989 NFL Draft. Jimmy Johnson replaced Tom Landry after Jerry Jones, the new owner, fired him on February 25, 1989.

A few months later, Jimmy Johnson selected Steve Walsh, who had played for him at the University of Miami, to the NFL’s supplemental roster. Steve Walsh was traded at the start of the 1990 season, and Troy Aikman was given the starting quarterback role.

On August 26, 1989, Troy Aikman took the field for his first NFL preseason game against the Denver Broncos. His NFL career began with a 28-0 loss to the New Orleans Saints. The Atlanta Falcons won the game despite Troy Aikman throwing his first touchdown pass the following week, a 65-yard completion to Michael Irvin.

He set an NFL rookie record by throwing for 379 yards in a game against the Arizona Cardinals. With an 0-11 start, Troy Aikman completed 155 of 293 passes for 1,749 yards, nine touchdowns and 18 interceptions.

In 1997, Troy Aikman became the first quarterback in Cowboys history to have three consecutive 3,000-yard seasons, but the team finished with a 6–10 record and failed to make the playoffs for the first time since 1990.
