Benedict Cumberbatch – arguably the actor best loved for playing the iconic Sherlock Holmes – almost didn’t return for the final season of the BBC series last season.
Steven Moffat, who co-created Sherlock with Mark Gatiss aka ‘Mycroft Holmes’, recently revealed the challenges of convincing Cumberbatch to return to the series. By the time BBC Sherlock Season 4 was about to start filming, Cumberbatch and his on-screen partner Martin Freeman aka John Watson had become huge stars.

While Cumberbatch captivated audiences as Doctor Strange, Freeman took us all on adventures in the world of The Hobbit. Both actors also explored each other’s universes with Cumberbatch as Smaug and Freeman as Everett Ross – much to the delight of Sherlock fans. However, such a heavy workload means that both actors have to be busy with film work.
Moffat confessed that the Sherlock team didn’t think they could convince either of them to return for Season 4. However, to their and their fans’ delight, both Cumberbatch and Freeman showed their love and dedication. Donate to the movie. Despite their busy schedules, they both decided to return with a newer story with even newer character arcs.
Fans of Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock know that this detective is not an emotional person or a normal family man. But as was the case with Gatiss and Moffat’s genius, Season 4 brought a notable twist in Sherlock’s character.

Coming to Season 4, Moffat shared that they always have to bring new storylines for both Cumberbatch and Freeman each season. And this time is no different. Sherlock’s character has undergone a transformation from an indifferent genius to a compassionate brother who finally calls Greg by his first name! As for Watson, life after Mary’s death seems to finally be returning to normal in Season 4!
One final note of hope and excitement that Moffat shares is that there’s always the possibility that the beloved detective and his sharp sidekick could return for another season of deductions!
