Early life and education
Velda Tan was born on September 3, 1987 in Singapore. She is the second child in a family of girls, with an older sister named Viola Tan and a younger sister named Vanya Tan.
She studied at Methodist Girls’ School and Pioneer Junior College. She continued her studies at Singapore Institute of Management (SIM) but dropped out after two years.
From 2013 to 2014, Velda Tan took two courses at Central Saint Martins, a college in London, where she studied drawing, pattern making and brand management.
Personal life
Frederick Yap is married to Velda Tan, and they have a daughter named Ellery Grace Yap. Her two sisters and her close friend Rachel Lim, who later became her business partner, were her bridesmaids at the Grand Hyatt Singapore in 2012 when the couple exchanged vows.
They worked together at Love, Bonito until Velda Tan left in 2013. They then formed a partnership and opened a restaurant in the food and beverage industry called Pince & Pints.
Velda Tan helped build the company’s initial branding, but her husband is responsible for the day-to-day operations. She also enjoys riding motorcycles.
She revealed in a 2017 Instagram post that she has polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a disorder that can cause infertility and sometimes causes the growth of ovarian cysts.
After several rounds of medication and visits to two gynecologists, Velda Tan conceived in 2017 and gave birth to Ellery Grace Yap in January 2018.
Career
Together with her sister Viola Tan and close friend Rachel Lim, Velda Tan co-founded Love, Bonito, BonitoChico in 2006, while still a college student. She led the company’s rebranding with her two partners in 2010 and left Love, Bonito in 2013 to pursue a solo career as a fashion designer.
Velda Tan provided more information about her decision to leave the company in a 2015 interview with High Net Worth, saying: “When I left Love, Bonito, it really hit me. I had a hard time adjusting… I made the decision without regrets, but I don’t understand why the voice inside me told me to leave.“ .
In 2015, two years after leaving Love, Bonito, Velda Tan founded Collate The Label. At Singapore Fashion Week 2015, the company made its runway debut by showing 22 designs from its Pre Fall 2015 collection.
That same year, Tangs Orchard welcomed Collate the Label’s first pop-up store. The local brand was also selected to participate in Coterie, a three-day trade fair in New York, in September 2015.
Velda Tan founded Our Second Nature in 2017, along with co-founder Lauren Tan. She oversees the organization’s design, marketing, branding, and marketing teams. Over the years, Our Second Nature has opened a retail space at boutique fairs called Our Second Corner.
