Revenge ending explained
After successfully unlocking Abby’s phone, Ben discovered that she had been exchanging text messages with someone named Ben who she had saved in her address book. To confront the man, he called Abby’s phone number, but unsurprisingly received no response. Later, at the “after-party”, Ben enters Sellers’ tent and notices the same medication that the county sheriff showed him, called an “oxygen stick.”
It became clear to Ben that Seiler had orchestrated Abilene’s death to make it look like nothing more than a statistic, taking advantage of her overdose. Surprisingly, Thaler acknowledged Ben’s reasoning and even admired his approach. Sensing an opportunity, Ben secretly recorded Seiler’s confession and obtained concrete evidence of Abby’s murder. What happened next, however, was even more important.
Thaler deftly turns the tables on Ben by using his own words to emphasize that in America, everyone will interpret Abby’s death according to their own perspective because that’s how things work today. This statement echoes Ben’s earlier conversation with Ty, where he mentioned that living in the real world, everyone does the same thing.
The seller seduces Ben further by suggesting that if there is no voice, a person ceases to exist. This concept is consistent with Ben’s efforts to prove his worth as a writer and affirm his existence through the podcast. Eventually, when Siler revealed that people would turn to Ben and Abby’s family to blame them for her death, Ben admitted that something made sense.
This revelation becomes a defining moment for Ben, shaped by Seiler’s words and his own journey to Texas, where he realizes the importance of public perception rather than personal truth. In a moment of rage, or perhaps driven by his emotional connection to Abilene’s family, her photos, songs, and nights spent in her room with her brother, Ben shot Siler, Perhaps in response to Thaler’s brutal honesty.
At the end of the film, Ben deletes all the recordings he collected for his podcast. He confides in Sharon that Abby’s story, her life, belongs to her family and perhaps his own. He has become part of Abby’s family. When Sharon says it’s all a shame, it reflects two aspects of Ben’s current state: Abby and his podcast recording. Both could have served themselves better, albeit in different ways, but now they are gone. All that’s left is deep regret.
