Villagers speak about upcoming performances at Trump’s inauguration event Facebook: Villagers
The Village People has confirmed the band’s upcoming performance at Donald Trump’s inauguration events.
On January 13, the disco group revealed through an official statement on Facebook that they had accepted an invitation to Trump’s inauguration activities, including “at least one event” with the President-elect.
“We know this won’t make some of you happy to hear this,” the band continued. “However, we believe that music should be performed without regard to politics.”
The band’s classic hit “YMCA” was a popular song of choice at Trump rallies, leading the band to note its impact and intent.
Village People said: “Our song ‘YMCA’ is a global anthem that will hopefully help bring the country together after a tumultuous and divisive campaign where the preferred candidate Ours has failed.”
The band also stated plans to “bring the country together through music.”
On December 2, 2024, band member Victor Willis defended the administration’s use of the song during Trump rallies. Although initially opposed to the gesture, Willis revealed that the campaign requested a political use license from Broadcast Music Inc. (BMI).
Willis also denied accusations that “YMCA” was a gay anthem.
