Early life and education
Linda Marie Edwards was born on October 4, 1948, in New Bern, North Carolina, United States. She is the daughter of Evelyn and Henry Edwards and is an only child. Her parents were both employees of the Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, a military base.
Edwards attended Havelock High School and then attended East Carolina University in 1966. At East Carolina, she earned a bachelor’s degree in French and a teaching certificate. Ethnically, Linda Marie Edwards is Welsh-American. Religiously, she is Roman Catholic.
Career
Linda McMahon’s career began as a receptionist and paralegal at the law firm Covington & Burling in the 1960s, where she also worked on intellectual property. In 1980, she co-founded Titan Sports, Inc., which later became World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE).
McMahon became chairman of the company in 1993 and CEO from 1997 onwards. Under McMahon’s leadership, WWE experienced tremendous growth and transformed the wrestling industry, leading some observers to regard her and her husband Vince as “business geniuses”.
In 2009, McMahon resigned as CEO of WWE to run for the United States Senate as a Republican candidate from Connecticut. Despite stepping down as CEO, McMahon retained a minority ownership stake in WWE.
