Viral Miley Cyrus and Bruno Mars’ ‘When I Was Your Man’ mashup reappears after copyright lawsuit

Miley Cyrus is currently fighting to dismiss a lawsuit claiming her song “Fflowers” is too similar to Bruno Mars’ “When I Was Your Man.”

Now, a resurfaced video from 2023 shows how the two songs came together. A video posted to Facebook in 2023 by singers Sara Niemietz and Moira Mack has more than 129,000 views on Facebook.

The two seamlessly transitioned back and forth between the two songs before combining two choruses to complete their performance.

Ironically, the mashup was recorded before the lawsuit was filed.

In legal documents, Cyrus’ team argued that the two songs exhibit “striking differences in melody, chords, other musical elements and lyrics” and that any similarities are not protected by copyright.

Cyrus is being sued by the songwriter who worked with Mars on the song, but her team has argued that there was a “fatal error” in the filing.

“The plaintiff is clear [says] that they had acquired the claimed rights to copyright ‘When I Was Your Man’ from only one of the four co-authors of that musical composition. That is a serious and irreparable defect in the plaintiff’s claim,” Cyrus’ lawyer said.

Her legal team continued to argue that hat Tempo Music Investment – which purchased the copyright from one of Mars’ co-writers – only gave the company “non-exclusive rights” to the song. Because of this, they continue to assert that under federal copyright law, such limited rights do not give someone the right to sue.

However, Tempo Music’s legal team member, Alex Weingarten, disputed this claim by issuing his own statement to Billboard.

“They are trying to make bogus technical arguments because they have no real defense for the case. We are not the assignees; we are the copyright owners. The law clearly state that we have the right to enforce our interests,” he said.

Tempo went on to claim in the lawsuit that “Fflowers” stole elements beyond response lyrics, including “melodic and harmonic material,” “pitch ending patterns,” and “musical line structure.” deep”.

Cyrus’ team asked for the lawsuit to be dismissed.
