Virginia Ann Foxx is a politician born on June 29, 1943, in The Bronx, New York, United States. She was raised in rural Avery County, North Carolina, by her parents, Dollie (née Garrison) and Nunzio John Palmieri, along with her unidentified siblings. Growing up, she was raised Catholic and identified as white.
She pursued further education, earning a Master of Arts in College Teaching from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and a Doctor of Education in Curriculum/Higher Education/Teaching from the University of North Carolina, Greensboro in 1985. She also received a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in 1968.
Career
Virginia Ann Foxx had a varied and successful career before entering politics. She worked as a research assistant, an English instructor, and a college administrator. She also served as president of Mayland Community College and as deputy secretary of administration under North Carolina Governor James G. Martin.
In politics, she served in the North Carolina Senate from 1994 to 2004. She held several committee assignments, including chairing the Education and Labor Committee and being a member of the Congressional Constitutional Caucus. She was also a member of the Republican Study Committee and the Italian-American Congressional Delegation.
Virginia Ann Foxx was first elected to the United States House of Representatives in 2004, defeating Jim Harrell, Jr. with 59% of the vote.[11] However, she faced the risk of defeat in the 2006 election when her opponent, Allen Joines, decided not to run because he felt that the race against Foxx would be too difficult.[12] Foxx’s opponent in 2006 was Roger Sharpe, whom she eventually defeated.
She was re-elected in 2008, with a landslide victory over Roy Carter of Ashe County. In 2010, Foxx was re-elected with about 65% of the vote. Despite facing potential challenges in previous elections, Foxx has been a strong and successful representative of her district.
Virginia Ann Foxx is a Republican politician who has served as the United States Representative for North Carolina’s 5th congressional district since 2005. In 2014, Foxx was re-elected with about 60% of the vote, defeating software developer Josh Brannon.
She continued her winning streak in 2016, with about 59% of the vote, again defeating Brannon. In 2018, Foxx was re-elected with 57% of the vote, defeating DD Adams, a council member from the North Ward of Winston-Salem.
Most recently, in the 2020 general election, Foxx won more than 66% of the vote, defeating Democrat David Brown. In 2022, Foxx is seeking re-election in the redistricted 5th congressional district, which favors Republicans.
She was also endorsed by former President Donald Trump in 2021. Despite facing a new challenger, Democrat Kyle Parrish, Foxx won by a landslide, 63.2% to 36.8%. Her continued success in elections shows her strong support in her district.
