Chidinma Ekile (born 2 May 1991), performing globally under the stage name Chidinma, is a talented Nigerian gospel singer, actress and songwriter. She rose to fame in 2010 after winning the third season of Project Fame West Africa.

She became the first female musician to top the MTV Base Official Naija Top 10 chart following the release of her single “Emi Ni Baller” music video.

In 2011, she released the single “Jankoliko” assisted by Sound Sultan. Her self-titled debut album, Chidinma, was released through the music platform Spinlet and featured the singles “Jankoliko”, “Carry You Go”, “Kedike” and “Run Dia Mouth”. The album featured guest appearances by Sound Sultan, Tha Suspect, Olamide and Muna.

early life

Chidinma Ekile popularly known as Chidinma is a Nigerian singer, songwriter and actress. She was born on May 2, 1991 in Ketu, Kosofi, Lagos State. She is from Imo State. She is the sixth of seven children.

She was born into an Igbo tribe to Martha Ekile (mother) and Hillary Ekile (father). She has two sisters named Chidinma and Chidiebere Aneke, also known as the Aneke twins.

Chidinma grew up under the strict discipline of her father and began singing at the age of six. At the age of ten, she joined the church choir.

Chidinma initially turned down admission to the University of Lagos because of her advancement in the West Africa Fame programme. In an interview with YNaija, she said she had always taken her studies seriously and her decision to attend the University of Lagos was inevitable. She also said music was not always her plan but after winning a music competition, she decided to give it a try.

Chidinma attended primary and secondary school in Ketu before moving to Ikorodu. She obtained a bachelor’s degree in sociology from the University of Lagos but wanted to study mass communication.

Before auditioning for the third edition of the West Africa Fame Project, she dreamed of being a part of a reality show. With the help and support of her close friends, Chidinma left her home in Ikorodu and headed to Ultima Studios. She was one of eight thousand contestants that year to showcase her talent.

Chidinma then joined 17 other contestants in the Celebrity Academy, where she and the other contestants were mentored for 10 weeks by music professionals: vocal coaches, motivational speakers, renowned musicians and music business service providers.

In addition, the contestants were trained with choreography and multiple rehearsals. On September 26, 2010, Chidinma was declared the winner of the competition. She won several prizes, including 2.5 million naira, a 2011 Toyota RAV4 and a production contract. In May 2013, Chidinma signed an endorsement deal with MTN Nigeria. As she puts it, Chidinma transitioned into the gospel music industry after signing with gospel music production agency Eezee Conceptz.

After releasing an album with another season 3 finalist, Chidinma began working on her self-titled debut studio album, Chidinma, which was originally scheduled to be released in the fourth quarter of 2011. She briefly discussed the album and said that she put a lot of effort into it.

She has worked with many producers including Cobhams Asuquo, Tee-Y Mix, WazBeat and Oscar Heman Ackah. On February 22, 2011, she released the singles “Jankoliko” and “Carry You Go” with the help of Sound Sultan. Both songs were written and produced by Oscar Heman Ackah.

In an interview posted on the Weekly Trust website, Chidinma said she was happy with the positive response to the songs and was working hard to improve her craft. On 4 June 2011, Chidinma released the music video for “Jankoliko”, directed by Clarence Peters. On 11 October 2011, she released the third single from the album, “Kedike”.

The song means “heartbeat” and was produced by Cobhams Asuquo. In an interview with Entertainment Rave, Chidinma revealed that she and her producer came up with the name of the song and further stated that the song depicts love.

The music video for “Kedike”, directed by Clarence Peters, was released on 24 January 2012. Nigerian singer Dami Crane plays Chidinma’s love interest in the video. On 11 October 2011, she released the album’s fourth single, “Run Dia Mouth”.

On September 14, 2012, she released the single “Emi Ni Baller”, which was assisted by Illbliss and Tha Suspect. The song was produced by Legendury Beatz. Yes, Academy peaked at number seven on Vanguard’s Top Ten Songs of 2013 list. The official remix of “Emi Ni Baller” was released on February 22, 2013. It features vocals from Wizkid and was also produced by Legendury Beatz. Capital Dreams Pictures released the music video for “Emi Ni Baller” on June 12, 2013.

The film was shot and directed by Clarence Peters in the United Kingdom. On June 10, 2013, Chidinma released three singles: “Bless My Hustle”, “Kite” and “Jolly”, produced by Tha Suspect, Del B and Wizzboy respectively.

On 14 September 2013, Chidinma released “Oh Baby”. Its remix was released on 29 January 2014, featuring Flavour N’abania. Both songs were produced by Young D. On 2 May 2014, she released the music video for “Oh Baby (You & I)”. The video was directed by Clarence Peters and stars Ngozi Nwosu and OC Ukeje.

One of Chidinma’s recent hits is “Fallen In Love” which was released in 2017. The video of the song has been viewed over 77 million times on YouTube.

Chidinma started her acting career in 2017 with the film “The Bridge” (2017 film) directed by Kunle Afolayan.

Gospel Music Career

After a long absence from the music industry, Chidinma Ekile reappeared in May 2021, but this time it was to celebrate her 30th birthday, and she shared her photos on Instagram.
