Meet Steve Letourneau, Mary Kay Letourneau’s First Husband

Steven Letourneau and Mary Kay Letourneau are living a happy life in Washington. New York Post Office quoted that they were college sweethearts. Michelle Lobdell, Mary Kay’s best friend since sixth grade in Newport Beach, California, told the news outlet that she was shocked when she first met Steve.

Michelle revealed that they had little in common intellectually. However, May was pregnant and her mother pressured her to marry Steve. The longtime friend told New York Post Office“He checked all the boxes but when I met him there was nothing there… Now I realize it was pressure from her mother. She wanted her approval and she never got it… She never had anyone in her life that she could trust to love her, protect her and look after her personal interests.”

Steve and Mary’s marriage was described as “stressed” and “riddled with turmoil and money problems”. Michelle believed that her best friend never loved Steve. Therefore, she created Villi Fualaau as her idea of an ideal partner.

In 1996, Steve and Mary were married and had four children. But Steve had no idea that his wife was having an affair with a 12-year-old student named Villi Fualaau. At the time, Villi was only a year and a half older than their oldest child.

After Steve Letourneau discovered love letters between his wife and the student, their marriage fell apart. “It really shocked me,” Steve recalls. “It was really unusual.”

Steve confronted Mary. She confessed. He then drove to the boy’s house. “I asked him straight up, ‘Did you sleep with my wife?’” The boy said yes. “I said, ‘Don’t call me again. This is big trouble.’” Steve said he consulted a priest and his wife’s family.

“It’s easier said than done to turn your child’s mother into a police officer,” he said.

After a relative reported their relationship to authorities, Mary Kay would be charged with second-degree child rape. Meanwhile, Steve filed for divorce and was granted full custody of their four children. He later moved to Alaska, remarried, and had more children. He continued to live his life while remaining silent about what had happened.

“I just want her to get help,” Steve LeTourneau told The Orange County Register in a phone interview from Alaska in 1997. “She’s not the Mary Poppins some people think she is.” At the time, Mary said she still loved the boy, whose identity was kept secret.

“It’s crazy. It’s crazy,” Steve LeTourneau said at the time. “She’s still living in a fantasy world.”

In July 2020, Mary Kay died of cancer at the age of 58. Her ex-husband, Steve, has not commented on his ex-wife’s sudden passing. But the Fualaau and Letourneau families have issued a joint statement addressing the matter.

“We are deeply saddened to share the incredibly difficult news that our beloved Mary passed away peacefully on July 6, 2020 after a six-month battle since being diagnosed with stage IV or metastatic cancer,” the statement read. “Mary fought tirelessly against this terrible disease. In that spirit, we ask for privacy and respect for the desire of all of us who make up Mary’s family to focus on the road ahead. We ask that our boundaries and privacy needs be respected with continued kindness and understanding,” the families added.

Steve said he has “moved on” and has “nothing to say” about the past in an interview with Everybody magazine in 2017. According to an insider, the blended family faced many challenges in the mid-1990s, but the ex-husband was able to overcome those controversies.
