Katherine Russell was born in Texas on February 6, 1989, to Warren Russell and Judith Russell. She spent most of her childhood in the suburbs of Rhode Island, New England. The couple then moved into his family’s shabby flat in Cambridge with his mother and brother, and in late 2010 they even gave birth to their daughter Zahara there. Katherine had to drop out of university in her third year to focus on her family; in 2008, she apparently voluntarily took the name Karima after converting to Islam for her partner. It is important to remember that her parents, especially her mother, never supported her relationship with Tamerlan because of his alleged abuse; this had nothing to do with their shared religious beliefs.
When information about her husband’s involvement in the triple murder and bombing of 2013 became public, Katherine was severely questioned as she adjusted to her new life as best she could. However, web searches for “rewards for mujahedeen wives” (Arabic for “jihadist”) and “If your husband becomes a shahid, what is your reward?” did not explicitly link to the part-time home health aide’s crimes at the time.
Neither her DNA nor her fingerprints were found on the bomb, and a computer search of the 2011 Waltham case combined with her husband’s name yielded no results.
“[O]“Your daughter lost her husband today, the father of her child,” Judith and Warren Russell said in a public statement at the time. “We cannot begin to comprehend how this terrible tragedy happened. After the horrific events of Patriots Day, we know that we never really knew Tamerlan Tsarnaev. Our hearts ache to learn of the horror he caused.”
In 2013, Warren and Judith made headlines after listing their large detached family home in North Kingstown, Rhode Island for $467,000. They had lived there for 14 years, but the pain of recent events seemed to have forced them to move to escape their past.
Public records show Warren bought the Colonial-style property on a tree-lined street in a quiet middle-class suburb in 1999.
