Who are Golda Rosheuvel’s parents?

Golda Rosheuvel’s parents, Judith Evan and Siegfried Rosheuvel, met in Barbados. Siegfried was there to attend a musical event and Judith was the niece of the Bishop of Barbados at the time. “Music and performance were always an important part of my life growing up. For example, my parents met while singing in a choir in Barbados.”

After a courtship, the couple moved to Guyana, where Siegfried worked as a missionary, in the late 1960s. They are believed to have married in Bartica, where Siegfried’s parents lived. The married couple then moved to Skeldon, where he worked as an assistant priest. The family then moved to Enmore and then Mahaica. Their next stop was Anna Regina in Essequibo.

Despite this, interracial marriage was still frowned upon in Guyana and around the world at the time, which is why Rosheuvel’s parents’ love story was so inspiring to her.

“I remember my parents being in love,” Rosheuvel recalled in an interview with supermodel Naomi Campbell for her online TV show No filter with Naomi“My parents left me with a solid foundation. Both my brother and I have clear minds and strong feet, and I am proud to call them my mother and father.”

Golda was born in Georgetown, Guyana, in 1970 during a series of demanding trips for her father’s work. “My mother would tell me stories about my father coming with her, and me as a baby on her back, and we would go into the bush for about two weeks with the tribes and celebrate communion with the natives. And there would be a baptism or a marriage organized around his visits,” the actress shared.

She has lived in the UK since her family moved there in 1975. However, she still feels strongly connected to her Guyanese heritage. The actress has said of her heritage: “We’ll have our capsicum. Our garlic pork, at Christmas. I still have my pre-cooked rice, my chicken curry. And then we’ll have afternoon tea, with scones and clotted cream and jam.”

Golda goes on to describe the difficulties they faced when they first got married and how they shaped the way she viewed the world and herself as an adult.[I]In Guyana, that’s how I always felt about my parents: incredibly, incredibly proud of their journey, of their struggle, of being a mixed-race couple back then. It wasn’t easy for them.”

Her life story has always revolved around finding balance between her two cultures. Rosheuvel feels that as a biracial lesbian theatre actress, she can be an inspiration to everyone in Guyana. She is well aware of the potential impact her profession can have on the people of Guyana both within and outside the creative industry.
