Alex Bazzell first met Napheesa Collier when she was a senior in high school. Soon after, Alex became her full-time coach when she became a freshman at the University of Connecticut. However, the two didn’t start dating until after Napheesa’s junior year in 2016.
After nearly 3 years of enjoying dating bliss, the couple got engaged in October 2019. The engagement took place while the two were walking in Central Park, and Alex suddenly got down on one knee and took out a diamond ring.
On their two-year engagement anniversary, Alex posted a photo of Napheesa and him on IG, captioning it: “CHAMPIONS!! 💍💍 My two favorite people have been through hell to get here.”
A month later, he revealed the happy news of their pregnancy on IG with the caption, “So excited to welcome a baby girl into the world in 2022!” Additionally, on the same day, Napheesa posted the same photos as Alex but with a different caption. The post read, “@napheesa24 and I are so excited to welcome a baby girl in 2022! We are looking forward to the next stage of our lives as parents. #girldad”
Still, the news of Napheesa’s pregnancy came as a “shock” to Alex. Likewise, Napheesa shared that it was a surprise—but “what does that saying mean, God laughs at people making plans?” she added.
They had always envisioned “building a family,” but they didn’t know when or where it would happen. So now that the time had come, they were ready for it.
According to Alex, who coached Kobe Bryant’s late daughter Gigi, he planned to use Kobe as his “ideal parent” role model.
