Meet Noelle Rodriguez, Lizzo’s former dancer
Three former dancers who were members of Lizzo’s dance crew are suing her, alleging harassment and a hostile work environment. Her production company, Big Grrrl Big Touring, Inc. (BGBT), and a so-called “dance crew captain” are also named as defendants in the complaint, filed Tuesday in Los Angeles Superior Court and obtained by CNN through an attorney for the plaintiffs.
The Grammy winner has been accused of weight-shaming by Noelle Rodriguez, Arianna Davis and Crystal Williams, who also say they were forced to touch a naked person at an Amsterdam strip club. The trio also allege the Truth Hurts hitmaker allegedly “invited crew members to take turns touching naked performers” inside the club, the filing states.
NBC News quoted Ron Zambrano, the attorney for the three dancers, as saying: “The appalling nature of how Lizzo and her management team treat their performers seems to go against everything Lizzo stands for in public.”
“In private, she mocked dancers’ weight and demeaned them in ways that were not only illegal but completely demoralizing,” he continued.
The first person to leave Lizzo’s team was Crystal Williams. Noelle publicly voiced her concerns to management about the decision to fire Crystal after Lizzo assured them she had “eyes and ears everywhere.” She then complained about being insulted and threatened to resign. Lizzo responded by telling her she was “lucky.” According to court documents, Lizzo gave Noelle the middle finger and uttered a racist slur when she decided to resign.
Lizzo’s dance crew leader, Shirlene Quigley, is also facing a number of charges.
“If they want to make an example of me, I’ll be happy to do it. Hopefully, we can be an example of dedication, courage, and perseverance under fire. I also hope to be an example of uncompromising nonsense. I feel at peace that I’m at a point in my career where I can say NO to disrespect. I walk away from spaces that don’t serve me, and more importantly, don’t deserve me.”
Noelle continued, “My talent, character, and reputation speak for themselves. Know your worth and never be afraid to use your voice. Stand up for what is right no matter who is doing it wrong. Be excited for what is coming. And honestly, it really is… #aboutdamntime.”
