Johnny Brown has to wake up hours before the first rays of early morning light pierce the sky to help his 4-year-old daughter, Ketanji, get ready for school at their apartment on the University of Miami campus.

He drove 40 minutes to Miami’s Brownsville neighborhood, dropped her off at preschool, then returned to the University of Miami’s Coral Gables campus to begin law classes.

We led by example. We always tried to put her in the best educational environment we could find, and then let her make the necessary adjustments and decisions from there.”

Ketanji Brown is on the verge of making history as the first black woman on the Supreme Court. She has all the qualifications needed to take on that role. To qualify for all of this, she credits her parents, especially her father, who was also a lawyer, with her success.

So Ketanji Brown’s election to the Supreme Court was not just her dream and her dream alone. The path her father laid out while creating a homeschooling environment was the foundation upon which Ketanji has built her entire career. “My father set me on this path when I was a child,” she once said. “My father made the fateful decision to switch from being a high school history teacher to going to law school.”

“I watched him study and he became my first professional role model,” said Ketanji.

Johnny Brown spoke about raising Ketanji and revealed, “She was absolutely right. We sat at the dining table. I studied and she did her thing with her colouring books and played.”
