Meet Sarai Johnson, Linda Greenlaw’s daughter
In the early morning hours of August 2006, Linda Greenlaw received a frantic call from a close family friend. It appeared that Sarai Johnson—a 15-year-old niece of a newcomer to the island—had burst into their home the night before, crying uncontrollably and saying she didn’t want to go home with her uncle.
When the locals investigated, they discovered that Sarai had been abused by her alcoholic uncle. So they banded together as a community to protect her and nominated Linda as her legal guardian.
Linda may have faced a fierce ocean storm 1,000 miles from home, spent 4 days away from land and watched towering walls of water crash onto the main deck, smashing everything in their path, but nothing could have prepared her for becoming a mother!
“How are we going to do that?” Sarai asked her at one point. “I don’t know. But if that’s what you want to happen, it will happen,” Linda replied.
“I did what I wanted when I wanted. Plus, with anything I pursue in life, if I’m not good at it right away, I’ll quit,” she recalls. “With motherhood, I was worried about whether I was good at it or not — and that’s not something you can ignore.”
Plus, Sarai was very well behaved. She had accumulated a $500 texting bill, brought her birth control pills to the dinner table when guests were there, had a vocabulary that included lame, stupid, and hate, and most disturbingly, she didn’t seem to like herself!
Seeing this, Linda’s family also wondered if she could complete the mission. But the Deadliest Catch star knew Sarai needed her and most importantly, she needed Sarai! “I need her. I’ve lived a very selfish life up until now,” she said.
Thankfully, after more than five years, the two “strong, passionate women” opened up to each other and Linda documented their emotional journey in the book Lifesaving Lessons: Notes from an Unwitting Mother.

Fast forward more than a decade and Sarai is now a seasoned fisherman. She is busiest in the summer.
Regarding her education, she attended Gould College from 2006 to 2010 and studied social work at Champlain College from 2010 to 2014.
Likewise, Sarai’s mother, Linda, is an accomplished fisherman. She is most famous for captaining the Hannah Boden in October 1991 during the infamous “Perfect Storm” of 1991. As of 2023, she is the only female swordfish captain in the United States.
In addition to fishing, she enjoys writing non-fiction books about the life of a commercial fisherman, such as Hungry Ocean, The Lobster Chronicles, All Fishermen Are Liars, Seaworthy, and Lifesaving Lessons. For these works, she won the American Maritime Literary Award (2003) and the New England Book Award for Non-Fiction (2004).

Now, moving away from swordfishing to try her hand at crabbing, Linda has joined the cast of Deadliest Catch season 19. “I’ve been involved in offshore redfish fishing in New England and have been fishing with fixed gear since I was a kid,” she says. “The main difference is pulling large, single pots as opposed to smaller trawls.”

Together, they run a company with more than 50 employees and are trying to apply for a $300,000 Community Development Grant to bring more diversity to the business and, with it, higher profits.
