Transgender actress Talisa Garcia has been cast in an upcoming Disney+ series Willowis also a reboot. Willow is about a princess who sets out on a quest to find her twin brother. The original show aired in 1988. The spin-off is set years after the original story.

The actress will appear in the show as the queen and mother of Tony Revolori’s character. She also made history as the first openly transgender actress to be cast in a production by Disney-owned Lucasfilm.

In 1991, Talisa Garcia began taking illegal female hormones that she received from elders in the transgender community. Her facial hair stopped growing and her breasts began to develop. With the support of her parents, Talisa Garcia was able to undergo full gender reassignment surgery when she turned 18. She described the six-hour surgery as “dangerous and brutal.”

Her mother’s hands shook as she signed a series of consent forms, and she remembered her mother asking her several times if she was sure.

Talisa revealed to Sun“When I was little, people used to call me ‘boy girl’ and ‘sissy’. I used to wear lip gloss and was the only boy in my ballet school. But no one bullied me. All the tough kids in school were my best friends.”

“My parents told me, ‘When you were three or four, we knew you were different.’ But they thought I was going to be gay,” the actress added. “When I was six or seven, I was playing with dolls. I didn’t want to cut my hair and I kept asking why girls wore dresses but I had to wear shorts.”

The surgery allowed her to accept her gender and start a new career as an actress.
