early life
Christopher George Latore Wallace, better known as “The Notorious Big Guy,” was born on May 21, 1972, in Brooklyn, New York.
Voletta Wallace and Selwyn George Latore, both Jamaicans, raised him as their only son.
When he was two years old, his father abandoned the family.
Born and raised in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn, near the border of Bedford and Stuyvesant, the notorious big man excelled in high school and won several English awards.
He started selling drugs at age 12. As a teenager, he began singing to entertain people on street corners and in neighborhood groups.
He attended the same high school, Westinghouse Vocational Technical High School, as future rappers Jay-Z, Busta Rhymes and DMX. At 17, he dropped out to work in drug trafficking, which led to multiple arrests.
In 1991, he was sentenced to nine months in prison for trafficking cocaine.
Profession
The Notorious B.I.G.’s work decisions were somewhat risky. However, during a routine drug deal on a trip to North Carolina, the soon-to-be MC was sentenced to nine months in prison. After his release, Biggie took a friend’s four-track recorder and recorded hip-hop music in his basement. The tapes were then distributed and aired on a local New York radio station.
The notoriously large man was not particularly good-looking, and he nicknamed himself Biggie because of his large build. Biggie was an attractive black man who was overweight, had very dark skin, and a slash through his eye. A young promoter and occasional producer, Sean Combs, heard Biggie’s early tracks. Puffy was impressed and decided to sign Biggie to his record label.
The Notorious BIG was born after Puffy and Biggie collaborated on the artist’s first recording. Biggie made his debut on the soundtrack to Who’s the Man? (1991) and on a remix of a Mary J. Blige song. Following these achievements, the album “Ready to Die”, which had been in the works for some time, was completed and released in 1994.
After the album was quickly certified platinum, Notorious BIG was named MC of the Year at the 1995 Billboard Music Awards.
The son of Jamaican kindergarten teacher Voletta Wallace and welder and minor politician Selwyn George Ratore, he grew up in Bedford-Stuyvesant, a poor section of Brooklyn. Biggie dropped out of high school at 17 and began dealing drugs, which he says was his only source of income. For a young black man trying to make a living in the ghetto, selling drugs for a living was a way of life.

Personal life
The notorious big man gave birth to his first child, T’yanna Wallace, on August 8, 1993, with his long-term partner and his high school sweetheart, Jane Jackson, but the two had already broken up.
Biggie married R&B singer Faith Evans on August 4, 1994. They reportedly met at a Bad Boy photo session and got married a few days later.
On October 29, 1996, Faith Evans gave birth to Biggie’s son Christopher CJ Wallace Jr.
Faith Evans has been embroiled in an East Coast vs. West Coast feud since she was accused of having an affair with Tupac Shakur. The Notorious BIG and Faith Evans had separated but were not officially divorced at the time of his death.
