Carrie Underwood’s decision to perform at Donald Trump’s inauguration on January 20 was defended by an unexpected person — Whoopi Goldberg.
In an episode of View mode On Jan. 14, Goldberg, who has long been critical of Trump, shared that she intended to “stand behind” Underwood despite the criticism she received after her performance was announced.
“I’m behind her,” Goldberg said through Diversity. “If I believe that I have the right to decide to perform somewhere, I believe [she has] similar rights. I have to assist. It doesn’t mean I particularly care. I won’t watch it, but that’s just me.”
Underwood was also defended by co-host Sunny Hostin.
“I think art is art and you have the right to perform where you want,” she added.
Alyssa Farah Griffin also defended Underwood, saying this was a smart business move by Underwood.
“If you have a problem, you complain by not downloading her songs and not going to her shows. However, I also think from a business standpoint, it’s not a Bad decision for Carrie Underwood,” she added.
Underwood has been strongly criticized online since her performance was announced on January 13.
“Carrie Underwood Jesus is about to take the wheel and boost your career right out of the toilet,” wrote user X, in reference to Underwood’s hit song, “Jesus Take the Wheel.”
“Are you all really surprised about Carrie Underwood performing at the inauguration?!? Please,” another wrote.
Another shared: “Carrie Underwood is performing at Tr*mp’s inauguration. I knew there was something about her that I never liked.”
After her performance was announced, Underwood shared her own statement about her decision.
“I love our country and am honored to be invited to sing at the Inauguration and to be a small part of this historic event. I humbly answer the call at a time when we all must come to each other in the spirit of solidarity and cooperation.” looking forward to the future,” she shared Hollywood Reporter.
She and her husband, Mike Fisher, have been in the spotlight before for their controversial moves on social networks. Fisher previously released a lengthy statement about his support for Aaron Rogers after the football player refused to be vaccinated amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Underwood also previously liked a tweet speaking out against mask mandates imposed during the pandemic.
