Wu-Tang Clan’s rare one-copy album sparks lawsuit against ‘Pharma Bro’ Martin Shkreli

The focus of recent legal action in New York is a one-of-a-kind album by the Wu-Tang Clan, purchased by former Wall Street figure Martin Shkreli.

According to APNews, “Pharma Bro” is being sued because of its exclusive music album.

After purchasing the rare album for $4.75 million, the group discovered that Shkreli had copied the content and distributed it widely. Title Once upon a time in ShaolinShkreli originally purchased the album for $2 million in 2015. In 2018, authorities seized the album to offset a $7.4 million forfeiture order stemming from his conviction for securities fraud and conspiracy.

Shkreli faced up to seven years in prison in the case but was released early in 2022.

After separating the album from Shkreli’s ownership, PleasrDAO acquired two parts – physical copies and digital rights – in July 2021 and another part in January 2024.

In the legal filing, PleasrDAO claimed that Shkreli illegally copied songs from the album and distributed them to a large audience. This includes instances where he performed music during a Twitter Spaces event that attracted nearly 5,000 participants. During a recent YouTube livestream in 2022, he reportedly mentioned playing the same video that someone bought for $4 million just the night before.

In its complaint, PleasrDAO asserted that distributing the album’s files would significantly reduce or eliminate its value, as it was originally designed as a single-copy project.

In court documents seen by APNews, the lawsuit says: “Any release of the Album’s music to the public would materially diminish and/or destroy the value of the Album, and cause substantial harm.” mention PleasrDAO’s reputation and ability to commercially exploit Albums.”

In search of justice, PleasrDAO is calling on Shkreli to delete all copies of the tracks, relinquish any benefits gained from streaming the tracks, and pay compensation for damages caused.

Shkreli publicly mocked PleasrDAO for taking legal action against him while justifying his behavior.

He said in a tweet, “these super nerds are suing me [three laughing emojis] least crypto related, whitest, least culturally relevant idiots, good luck!”
