Chen Cuichang (born 27 October 1961), better known by her stage name Xiang Yun, is a talented Singaporean actress and television presenter.

She is a veteran and is called MediaCorp’s first “Ah Jie” (senior actress).

Early life

Chen Cuichang, commonly known as Xiang Yun, was born in Singapore on October 27, 1961. She comes from a family of three girls and one boy, she is the eldest child. She comes from a poor family so her childhood was not very rosy.

It’s so bad that parents can’t afford to pay for food. Xiang Yun spent most of her childhood with her grandmother in a one-room apartment.

The worst part was that her biological parents also lived in the same apartment. However, her parents had no choice but to move out of the apartment after the birth of two more girls.

As the first child in the family, Xiang Yun did a lot of housework, such as washing his siblings’ clothes and cleaning the house. All these adversities did not break her spirit; instead, they made her even stronger.

She received her diploma in nutritional and floral therapy from the National University of Singapore.

Personal life

Xiang Yun is married to Edmund Chen, a former MediaCorp actor. They met on the set of Patrol. They married after a short courtship and received much media attention as celebrity marriages that are not widely publicized are unusual in the local entertainment industry.

Their marriage was blessed with two children, a boy and a girl. The son was Chen Xi, and the daughter was Chen Yixin.

Career

Xiang Yun is a member of SBC’s first group of theater training students to graduate. In 1980, she began her acting career in children’s television series. In 1983, she appeared in the television series Double Blessings and the film All That Glitters Is Not Gold.

She rose to fame in 1984 for her role as Ah Mei in The Awakening, the love interest of Huang Wenyong, who played Ah Shui.

Xiang Yun, along with Huang Wenyong, was listed in the Top 5 most popular on-screen co-stars and the Top 5 most memorable drama characters of the past 25 years at the 2007 Star Awards commemorative special awards ceremony.

She played Elizabeth Choy, a Singaporean military heroine, in the 1997 war film The Price of Peace. She briefly stopped acting after the birth of her second child.

Since returning to mainstream television in 2000, Xiang Yun has landed important roles in several popular MediaCorp productions, such as Double Happiness, Portrait of Home, The Little Nyonya and Kinship.

Despite competition from younger actors, Xiang Yun still maintains his popularity. She won the “Best Supporting Actress” award four times in 1998, 2000, 2001 and 2009.
