Shawn Mendes is clarifying his sexuality.

During a recent performance in New York City, Mendes debuted a new song titled “The Mountain” from his upcoming album. Shawn. A fan shared a clip of the performance on TikTok, and Mendes appeared to address longtime rumors about his sexuality in the lyrics.

“I’ve had a change of heart / you can say what you need to say / you can say I’m too young / you can say I’m too old / you can say I like girls or boys / whatever What fits your mold,” he can be heard singing in the clip.
Mendes has not commented on the song or any rumors surrounding his sexuality since the clip was released. However, this is not the first time he has spoken out about rumors surrounding his sexual preferences.

Talk to Dax Shepard for his reasons Armchair expert podcast in 2020, Mendes explained why the subject was “so uncomfortable”.
“I was really upset because there were some people in my life that I was very, very close to… who were gay and closeted. And I felt really angry toward those people, ” he said.
Mendes also noted that talking about rumors can be difficult.
“You want to say, ‘I’m not gay but it would be okay if I were. Also, there’s nothing wrong with being gay but I’m not.’ You really don’t know how to respond to this situation,” he shared.

“People have been calling me gay since I was 15 years old. I’m not gay and I wonder, ‘What does that mean?’ I had these problems with my voice. I wondered, ‘How do I sit?’ I’m always the first to cross my legs and sit in this feminine position and I really suffer from it,” Mendes explains.
All in all, Mendes understands things are complicated and any response he gives about the rumors won’t be perfect.
“I realized we don’t need to be experts and politicians about it, especially as a famous musician being a guy. I need to get really messy and say things If something is wrong, apologize and say the right thing.” After I apologized and was confused about how to respond when people said I was gay,” he said.
Mendes dated Camila Cabello from July 2019 to November 2021 and Sabrina Carpenter for several months in 2023. Carpenter’s hit “Taste” was rumored to be about Cabello and Mendes.
