Zainab Shamsuna Ahmed (born 16 June 1960) is the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

She was called to the Ministry of Finance after Kemi Adeosun resigned in 2018. She is a Nigerian politician and accountant.

Prior to her appointment to President Muhammadu Buhari’s cabinet, Zainab Ahmed worked as a senior accountant at the Kaduna State Ministry of Finance.

She is also an indigene of Kaduna State and holds a Bachelor of Science and Master of Business Administration in Accounting after pursuing advanced studies in two tertiary institutions.

Early life

Nigerian Finance Minister, Zainab Ahmed was born on June 16, 1960. She was raised in Northern Nigeria.

She spent most of her early days in her hometown in Kaduna state and learned the local dialect before moving to the western part of the country to study.

The 60-year-old also grew up in a religious family; with a father who was passionate about doing things in accordance with Muslim culture. She was also considered a smart girl due to her academic achievements; better than her siblings, as well as her friends.

Because educational opportunities for girls in the North were limited at that time, Zainab Ahmed was also fortunate to be one of the few children in her neighborhood who received a good education.

Education

During her time at the basic level, Zainab Ahmed was considered the best student in her school. Her altruism made her popular among teachers and other students. She was also known for her punctuality.

She started and completed her secondary education with distinction at Queen Amina College, Kaduna, before going to Zaria where she obtained her A’Level.

In 1981, Zainab Ahmed obtained her first degree from Ahmadu Bello University after majoring in Accounting and briefly studying at Olabisi Onabanjo University.

Ahmed obtained his MBA from Ogun State University, Ago Iwoye, in August 2004.

Her educational qualifications include MBA, Bachelor of Accountancy (1981) from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria; IJMB ‘A’ Levels (1979) from SBS/ABU Zaria; and WASC ‘O’ Level in 1977 from Queen Amina College, Kaduna.

Career

Zainab Ahmed is currently the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Her illustrious career began in 1982 when she was appointed as Accountant II in the Main Accounts Department of the Ministry of Finance in Kaduna State; after completing her National Youth Service in Kaduna State in 1981/1982 where she was posted to main duty at Messrs. Egunjobi Suleiman & Co. Chartered Accountants, as an Audit Trainee.

In March 1984, Ahmed was promoted to Accountant I at the Ministry of Finance before resigning in 1985 to join NITEL.

She is also the former Executive Secretary and National Coordinator of the Nigerian Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI), and a member of the last two NEITI boards, having previously served on NEITI and EITI Global. Some of her duties as a National Public Officer include; managing the Kaduna State Nigeria Investment Corporation and serving as the Chief Financial Officer of the Nigerian Mobile Telecommunications Company.

In 2018, Zainab Ahmed was appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari as Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning following the resignation of Finance Minister Kemi Adeosun.

She was reappointed by the President and sworn in on August 21, 2019.

Zainab Ahmed’s achievements in the field of Finance do not prevent her from spending time with her family. However, this respected Minister has a very busy life, with a lot of time spent in her homeland.

She is also a devoted Muslim and performs her Islamic duties with great respect. She is also the sibling of Kaduna State Governor, Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai.
