The childhood home of Malcolm Young and Angus Young has been demolished due to “oversight” by developers.
According to News.com.au, the property developers were never informed of the cultural significance of the house, which is where the brothers founded AC/DC in 1973. While the house was not still standing, property was destroyed. has been labeled an “oversight” by the developers.
Burwood Square Pty Ltd general manager Leon Kmita shared that they only became aware of the property’s significance after it was demolished.
“Learning of this connection after our plans were already underway has left us in shock. We are truly sorry for this oversight. On behalf of the team at Burwood Square, I would like to express our condolences.” Our sincere regrets… we now realize how deeply this venue has impacted the AC/DC community and fans around the world,” he said via the news agency.
The house was previously purchased by developers in February 2023 and was listed on the National Trust Register of Historic Homes after becoming a popular tourist attraction. The company had plans to build a $28.75 million residential development that would house No. 4 Burleigh Street in Sydney’s Inner West.
“We feel a strong responsibility to honor AC/DC’s legacy and make amends to all the fans who have held this band in such high esteem. While we cannot change too much past but we are dedicated to honoring this important part of their story. AC/DC’s global fan base, please know that we listen to you, appreciate your deep admiration. for this legendary band and always strive to make it right right,” the statement added.
The Young brothers moved into this house after living together for several years and after moving from Scotland.
AC/DC went on to become one of the most successful bands in rock history. They have sold more than 200 million albums worldwide and helped popularize the new wave of British heavy metal bands. AC/DC were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003 and their albums Back to black It is estimated to have sold an estimated 50 million copies worldwide and has been certified 27x Platinum in the US for equivalent sales of 27,000,000 units domestically.
Although the line-up has changed over the years, Angus still tours with the band at the age of 69 while Malcolm passed away in 2017.
