MUMBAI: Saira Banu, wife of famous music composer AR Rahman, has announced their separation after 29 years of marriage.
Indian media reported that Saira’s lawyer issued a statement citing “significant emotional stress and insurmountable differences” as the reason for the separation.
The couple, who married in 1995 and have three children together, have asked for privacy as they navigate this challenging time.

Saira’s lawyer, Vandana Shah, issued an official statement on her behalf, explaining the decision: “After many years of marriage, Mrs. Saira has made the difficult decision to separate from her husband, Mr. AR Rahman. This decision entailed significant emotional strain on their relationship. Although they love each other deeply, tensions and difficulties have created an insurmountable gap that both sides feel cannot be overcome at this time. Ms. Saira emphasized that this decision came from pain and suffering. She asks for privacy and public understanding as she navigates this difficult chapter in her life.”
The statement emphasized the emotional toll of the decision while calling for respect and privacy for the couple and their families.
