Career

Baba Suwe started acting at the age of 18 when he dropped out of middle school and was then in fourth grade.

He developed his passion when Baba Mero and his team went to a children’s boarding school in Osogbo to act. After watching them, he took drums and other musical instruments, picked some boys from his streets like Mufitau Ilumoka, Sola Taiwo, etc., and formed a theater group.

That is what turned into the ‘Baba Suwe’ brand today. His first performance was at Amuto playground, Lagos Island. Even though it was a free show, he was happy because it achieved great success.

Baba Suwe gained attention after appearing in a movie titled Omolasan, a movie produced by Obalende. He became more famous after appearing in Iru Esin, produced by Olaiya Igwe in 1997.

He has acted in and produced several Nigerian films, such as Baba Jaiye Jaiye, a film featuring Funke Akindele and Femi Adebayo, son of veteran actor Adebayo Salami. He is famous for his 21st century films; N150 Million (2003), Kowope (2004), and 36 Kiniun (2003).

In 2011, Baba Suwe was accused of trafficking cocaine by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency. This allegation was described by the Lagos high court judgment as false and defamatory. His lawyer was the late Bamidele Aturu, a Nigerian lawyer and human rights activist.

Personal life

Baba Suwe was married to Mrs. Monsurat Omidina, a famous comedian and actress known as Omoladun Kenkelewu, from 1995 until her death in 2009.

He has three children – Junior Ominida, Halimat Omidina and Okiki Omidina. After his wife’s death, his stepdaughter, Omolara Kareem, accused him of killing her mother.

According to her, “She [Monsurat] died of high blood pressure due to an argument with her husband.” He has since remarried.

In 2017, veteran actor Baba Suwe suffered a stroke and has been unable to move since then. He blamed his health challenges on the detention of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
