“It was like Gandhi meets Rambo… We just set up the cameras and made a mess in the living room,” Paul explains. “It’s just fun, there’s no exciting cinematography.”

Until he entered Homewood High School, he continued to produce films with his mother throughout his childhood as a way to avoid writing assignments for his studies. Peter Hastings, a friend of Paul’s, will be assigned to write a paper on a certain social studies topic, and Paul will offer to proofread it.

“I started working with him, then I saw the movie The Matrix and [it] just blew me away,” Rogers said. “And I’ve never been so obsessed with a movie before. After watching ‘The Matrix’, I watched ‘Memento’, Christopher Nolan’s second film. That film made me realize how incredible editing is.”

Paul entered Santa Fe College’s film program with the intention of pursuing a career in filmmaking. There he was exposed to many different artistic mediums and had opportunities to direct, act and edit.

Paul eventually moved to Los Angeles to pursue filmmaking, where he briefly worked on “The Eric Andre Show.” It was in Los Angeles where Rogers met Dan Kwan and Dan Scheinert, the directing duo known as “the Daniels,” known primarily for their work producing music videos.

At a roller skating rink in Los Angeles, Paul met Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert; they clicked (in part because Scheinert was also from Birmingham, Alabama), and Rogers was asked to help them do a music video camp. Daniels then gave Rogers the opportunity to edit their music video for DJ Snake and Lil Jon’s “Turn Down For What” soon followed.

After several years of writing scripts for Everything everywhere at onceDaniels approached Rogers and asked him to be their editor.

“Originally, the movie was supposed to be about a father and a daughter, with Jackie Chan in it,” Paul said in the interview. “And then when it changed to mom and changed to Michelle [Yeoh] I’m even more excited because another one of the movies that was really formative for me was ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’. Start working with [Yeoh] It was a dream come true and I’m still blown away every time I see her.”
