President of Nigeria

Bola Ahmed Tinubu ascended to the presidency on May 29, 2023, with global approval of legitimacy. The inauguration ceremony at Eagle Square in Abuja marked the symbolic transfer of power from his predecessor Buhari.

In a bold move, Tinubu abolished fuel subsidy in his inauguration speech, causing much backlash. The scrapping, praised by the World Bank, signals a significant financial shift. Tinubu’s financial activities continued as he suspended the central bank governor, Godwin Emefiele, and appointed a new acting governor, Folashodun Adebisi.

As subsidies disappeared, foreign exchange restrictions were lifted and the local currency depreciated. Tinubu’s financial acrobatics, rivaling those of the 1986 SAP regime, sought to remake Nigeria’s economic scenario. The stage was set by the inauguration of the National Economic Council, a council of wizards ready to advise the President, with Wale Edun as head of monetary policy.

In a dramatic shuffle, Tinubu appointed key figures – Senator George Akume, head of government affairs, and Femi Gbajabiamila, chief coordinator of the presidential staff. The suspension of Abdulrasheed Bawa, the head of the EFCC, created an additional surprise because Bawa had previously probed Tinubu’s work.

In a radical departure, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu was declared National Security Advisor, a nod to civilian control in a chessboard dominated by the military. The purge of more than a hundred generals further consolidated Tinubu’s control in a reshaped security landscape.

The film opens with the suspension of EFCC chairman Abdulrasheed Bawa, adding intrigue to an already complicated story. Tinubu’s diplomatic debut took him to Paris and London, while the formation of his cabinet and calls for military intervention in Niger added layers of suspense to the unfolding political drama. As the curtain falls on Tinubu’s presidency, Nigeria has anticipated the nuances of his leadership.
